We are Swapfiets; started in 2014 and currently active in 70+ cities, across 9 different countries. At our HQ in Amsterdam, we work with around a hundred colleagues to offer the very best user experience to our customers, who in turn receive epic service from a team of 1500+ swappers and bike mechanics.

The impact that you will have, as our new Engineering Manager, is massive; you will play an integral part in structuring processes, building on our high-performance culture, and shaping how engineering happens at Swapfiets. You will add value in shaping our Technology backbone, for servicing 270K+ customers around the world. With about 30 colleagues in Tech, we solve problems for our customers and colleagues.

As an Engineering Manager you will manage ~10 engineers across three teams. You will report into the CTO and collaborate with other managers from engineering, data and digital product. Responsibilities range from coaching and hiring the team you trust and want to get out of bed for, to collaborating with Product on aligning roadmaps with business goals and delivery.


What are you going to do?

  • Lead and develop the Engineering Vertical, focused on inclusion and respect.

  • Responsible for technology strategy.

  • Manage technology budget (internal employees and freelancers), infrastructure, tooling, and partnerships.

  • Manage and mentor a team of engineering professionals, encouraging career progression and hard- & soft-skill development.

  • Maintain the overview of the Technology roadmap with input from Tech Leads, and keep track of delivery on technology KPI's.

  • Ensure we continue to ship scalable, highly-available products, by aligning Technology roadmap with Product Management and business goals.

  • Identify and act on opportunities to increase team efficiency and quality of work.

  • Set performance expectations, recognize achievements, and provide actionable feedback to team members.

  • Build strong and high-performing verticals and chapters, facilitating the adoption of best practices in Front-end, Back-end, and QA areas of expertise.

Job requirements

The ideal candidate will have

  • Proven leadership ability, especially in hiring, training, and mentoring software engineers. Youʼll be well versed in planning the career path of team members, ensuring engineers are engaged and inspired;

  • Experience managing teams (3+ years) who work on complex problems and scalable solutions, crucial to business success. You have hands-on experience as an engineer so you can join and contribute to the technical conversation;

  • Experience managing technical project planning, prioritization, and execution. You will be the primary contact for our infrastructure partners and will manage a range of IT projects;

  • Previous technical experience as a software developer

  • Excellent communication skills, capable of connecting with technical and non-technical audiences. English is a must, (you’ll be working in an international team);

  • You think in terms of the value added to the business and users and know the trade-offs to make between Product and Technology;

  • You are a self-starter with the ability to turn ambitious ideas into actionable team goals.
